In an interview with G4, Tod Howard of Bethesda revealed that vampires will be playable in Skyrim; as they were in Oblivion. Like Oblivion you can contract the virus, which has various stages depending on your power as a vampire.
You’ll control your instincts and grow in power by feeding off people while they sleep. Sunlight will damage you (likely by weakening you). It’s doubtful that you’ll burst into flames in a gloriously explosive fashion, though admittedly that would be awesome.
This makes me quite pleased, and reinforces Skyrim as a game that I’ll be picking upon release. No screenshots have been revealed on how vampirism will effect your appearance. Though hopefully you won’t be as ridiculous as you did in Oblivion.
