Usually, voting on video game awards doesn’t rank up next to something as big as the Emmys or Oscars. This year is proving to be another one of those years when it comes to unpredictability, and the annual video gaming awards is starting to look like it’ll be a grand event. Earlier yesterday, the Gamesmaster Golden Joystick Awards recorded more than 1 million votes across 14 individual categories in just less than six weeks of voting.
While last year’s record numbers totaled over 1.5 million votes, 2011′s voting looks like it’s set to break it yet again. There’s still a full month to go before the polls close, and according to numbers like this, it might just reach more than 2 million.
“It’s great that we’ve already hit a million,” says the awards’ editorial co-ordinator George Walter. “All the time we’ve spent engaging with different game communities and extolling the Joysticks brand through social media is paying off.
“We’re also seeing some surprises in the voting, with a few unexpected titles taking an early lead — it’s too soon to say for sure, but we could be looking at a few upsets when the winners are announced.”
An upset in the making? This is going to be one great awards ceremony, which will be held in glitz and glamor on October 21st in London. For the first time, the ceremony will also be presenting world exclusives through press conferences and big time presentations.
