Go ahead and add “Biggest Social Online Title” to the list of The Sims‘ list of achievements. From one of the biggest boxed games to one of the biggest social games on Facebook, The Sims make Zynga’s FarmVille look like child’s play. With over 40 million active users monthly, it’s second only to CityVille, which currently has 75 million users per month.
Playfish, a developer acquired by EA in 2009 over a $300 million deal, has been working hard on the title in its London location. Founder and co-GM Kristian Segerstrale said in an interview with MCV that “The Sims social is a huge leap forward in the evolution of social games. In bringing one of EA’s most popular game franchises to Facebook, Playfish and The Sims team have redefined the meaning of social in video games.”
Sergerstrale believes that the success of The Sims on Facebook was due to the creativity that the game encourages, along with Playfish’s “expertise and passion for social play.” “…we feel we’ve brought something very special to life — and tens of millions of players around the world have responded with extraordinary enthusiasm over the last few weeks,” he continued. “We’re looking forward to working with players to evolve the game and its features in new and exciting ways in the coming months and beyond.”
