Well, I can’t say that I did not see this coming. While DC Universe Online has offered a surprisingly polished MMORPG experience, it has been hampered with a far too low level cap, behind schedule updates for holiday content and basically, lacking much for people to do after finishing the game. Now everyone will get the chance to play alongside their favorite villan or hero free of charge starting October 2011.
Yes, DC Universe Online is taking the free to play route on both PS3 and PC, and it will have three levels of play depending on where you stand in the game. The first tier will be the free to play model where you can access all of the current content, have two character slots and a limited inventory. You can access extra mission packs and other items for a small microtransaction. Those that have spent at least $5 on your subscription or on in-game items will be classified as Premium members. Those members will get two extra character slots, extra inventory slots and extra cash limits. Future mission packs will be available to premium members at an additional cost. Finally we have Legendary members who for the same fee they are paying right now will get 15 character slots, 80 inventory slots, unlimited guild membership and all DLC packs at no additional cost.
While I have had my issues with DC Universe Online, I still think it is a very well designed MMORPG, albeit with some serious flaws. It desperately needs a level cap increase and they need to be far more timely with updates. But it is a no-brainer that people should give this a shot when it goes free. I’ve been playing this game since it went Free-To-Play… is it worth the subscription? Maybe but it is definitely worth FREE! If you haven’t played it then I strongly suggest you try it. You will not lose anything because it’s Free-To-Play…
