What Is XCOM
2K Games have released the first developer diary for their upcoming 2012 title, XCOM and they focus on trying to explain what XCOM is in this new incarnation of the series. As old time gamers are aware, the original X-COM titles were turn based strategy titles that bear little resemblence to the new title in the series.
Obviously the biggest point is the move from overhead turn based strategy to first person shooter, but the team goes to great pains to explain the links between the two series. XCOM is looked at as an origin story with a focus on the origins of the agency and how it was created. It also retains the idea of recruiting soldiers, building up their skill sets and of course, harvesting technology to bring the fight to the aliens.
I really do like the idea of more plot development coming out of the main base hub and the reasoning behind the selection of people that work at this agency as they do not fit the normal profile of the era of the 1960’s in America. This agency is run by a woman and seems to have a very diverse workforce which goes against the grain of that period and it does play into the main story.
Take a look at the new developer diary below. XCOM is set for a March 2012 release for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 from 2K Games.
