With DmC in the works and the dismal sales of Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, it’s no surprise that developer Ninja Theory has scrapped a sequel. While Monkey and Trip’s adventure features some of the most beautiful environments, stellar animation, and a fresh twist on a centuries old legend, Ninja theory co-founder Tameem Antoniades said that the title should have sold better on the retail level. The game was released alongside heavy hitters like Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and Fable III last October, and perhaps it got lost amidst the triple-A scramble.
“Enslaved should have done better,” said Antoniades in an interview with Edge. “Right now we should have been doing a sequel and perfecting that sequel and doing what franchises do, which is get better over time. …because that didn’t happen we’ve not expanded to two teams like we intended to. So we’ve remained a smaller shop.
“But now we get another chance with DmC.”
The upcoming reboot of the popular devil-killing franchise has already caused a rift between fans. Some have forgiven the studio for their artistic interpretations of Dante, but others have yet to bury the hatchet. Some of the latest trailers demonstrate Ninja Theory’s determination to win disillusioned fans back, but will it be enough?
No release date has been scheduled for DmC yet, but we’re going to hope that it drops in 2012.
