Interview: End of Nations

Interview: End of Nations

24 Sep, 2011

On the first day of the Eurogamer Expo, in London’s Earls Court, GGSgamer were fortunate enough to interview the guys over at End of Nations. End of Nations is an upcoming free to play MMORTS, and it looks awesome! Have a look at the interview with Lance from End of Nations below:

GGSgamer: I was wondering if you could give us a brief overview of the game?

EON: Sure. So our whole goal here is to make the next big RTS. That being said we want to set a new standard, we want to create something brand new, hence we’re calling this RTS MMO. We have the massively multiplayer part, the 26 vs. 26; we also have a commander that you level up to unlock new super-weapons, new structures, new units, all kinds of stuff. You gain experience from playing everything, PVP, PVE, Campaign, co-op, everything. With that being said we also have a Risk style meta-game, and that can last three to four months, and that’s everybody on the same server and each faction fighting for control of the world, kind of like Risk. So that’s part of our massively multiplayer thing. We’re trying to bring all these people together, fighting for one singular goal. Like you might only play multiplayer, you might never touch campaign; you’ll still effect the meta-game. Some people may only play campaign; they’ll still affect the Risk-style meta-game. Everything you do will affect it.

GGSgamer: How many numbers of unit will a player be able to control in a multiplayer game?

EON: Each screen has a different number of units playable. We work on a loud-out system. We have twenty tickets and your units can’t go over that number. Every machine equals twenty. For instance, one player might have twelve units, that equal twenty tickets, and one might have seven units but they also equal twenty. One player’s units are less powerful but he has more of them, the other player has fewer units but his are more powerful. It helps us keep things balanced.

GGSgamer: In terms of super-weapons, are they all offensive based?

EON: No. There are offensive and defensive super-weapons. We have some that will heal your units, some that’ll protect you from damage for a short time, some that’ll destroy enemy helicopters, some that’ll destroy enemy tanks, you name it.

GGSgamer: End of Nations is free to play, but is it pay-to-win?

EON: No, that is one of our main points. We want this to be the next big RTS. We can’t have it be pay-to-win because that totally ruins the balance issues of it. What we’re selling is stuff like customisation options and things that’ll boost your experience. You can’t buy any in-game advantage, otherise it just ruins PVP.

GGSgamer: If it isn’t pay-to-win, how do you generate revenue?

EON: We’re selling colours because some of the colours are awful. We’re also selling skins. I could make my entire units look like the British flag, the American flag, and cheetah stripes. One of our developers really likes bacon so we made a bacon skin, and it looks ridiculous.

GGSgamer: With the 52 players online, how do you tackle lag issues?

EON:It’s all client server based, everybody connects to us, meaning there is no lag. Everybody’s running on our server.

GGSgamer: Other than multiplayer, what other game-types do you have?

EON: Single-player is still online but it is more of a campaign mode. Basically, our back story is this is around 50 years in the future, a third faction called the Order of Nations took over the world under peaceful means, and it turned out they’re kind of a tyranny. We have two playable factions which are The Liberation Front, and Shadow Revolution. You’ll choose one of those once you start the game and you’ll play as a commander. Throughout the campaign you’ll fight alongside the other faction trying to destroy The Order of Nations. In the multiplayer it is faction versus faction.

GGSgamer: Final question. When is it released?

EON: We haven’t announced that yet. But, you can always go to our website, www.endofnations.com, and sign up for the Beta. We post all our news there.

GGSgamer: Thank you for talking with us, we look forward to seeing what End of Nations has in store!
