Crunching Numbers: 28% of 3DS Players Say 3D Detracts from Gameplay

25 Sep, 2011

The biggest selling point of Nintendo’s 3DS system is the glasses-free 3D display. Ironically enough, the latest survey from researching firm Interpret LLC says that 28% of 3DS owners didn’t like the 3D tech. In fact, it detracted from the gameplay. Only 22% of players said otherwise.

Want even more crazy numbers? Senior VP of Interpret Dan Casey found that 13% of 3DS owners liked playing the handheld without the 3D on. Further research by Interpret has also shown that Nintendo did a terrible job at educating consumers about the system — 28% of the surveyed 1,600 adults didn’t know that glasses weren’t needed to view the 3D effects.

As if it was a final nail in the coffin, most of the survey respondents (a whopping 56%) said that they’d rather have a 3D-capable console with a TV than a tiny handheld device.

It’s not really a wonder, then, that Nintendo’s 3D handheld has sold below expectations. With numerous price cuts and a slew of first party titles for the 3DS coming in 2012, Nintendo is hoping to win back their losses in the upcoming battle of the Holiday release season. Whether it will be enough to save the 3DS or not remains to be seen.
