id Software’s Rage is Living It Up for Being Huge

The jam-packed monstrous post-apocalyptic shooter is going to be huge, and it’ll also be huge on your hard drive and your discs. Let’s hope all the hardware and software will support this game, because it’s going to take three discs on the X360 version to run. The PlayStation 3 is already calling for an 8GB space to install, and the PC is being hit the hardest — 25GB of your hard drive will be dedicated to this huge game, so you better check to make sure your rig has the capabilities to spare the space.

“We recommend installing the game to the hard drive, but you don’t need to install all three discs,” said creative director Tim Willits of the X360 version. “If you don’t have the space available on your hard drive, don’t stress. Install the first disc, the first chapter, the first half of the game, and when you’re done, uninstall and install disc two. You don’t really need to install the multiplayer disc if you’re really tight on hard disk space.”

For the curious, the PlayStation 3 version will only have one disc, but will require players to make an 8GB installation. While it will take some time, the end result is a game with a much more fluid and beautiful look. “Sony was great,” said Willits of the mandatory installation. “Kudos to Sony for letting us do that. They don’t allow every game to [require installations]. So definitely, hats off… What we were able to do is install all the textures to the highest level. Everyone has one Blu-ray drive, one hard drive, it’s all the same. Some of the other systems you have… should I install it on my 360? Should I not install it? So yes, it’s very nice.”

For such a huge game the demands such large space, one wonders what exactly is hidden in all that code. Hopefully it’s not as embarrassing as the recent Dead Island ruckus.

Rage is set to blast its way onto the scene on October 4th for the Xbox 360, PC, and PlayStation 3.
