Don’t rub your eyes and stare in disbelief. While the capabilities of the Nintendo Wii were very much underwhelming, the unveiling of Nintendo’s mysterious new console at E3 has garnered much attention. What’s more, big name third party developers are starting to get behind the platform, such as Irrational Games and Ubisoft. Count Bethesda Softworks now as a potential addition to that growing list of stardom.
In an interview with the Official Nintendo Magazine, Bethesda’s Pete Hines said that working on the Wii U is “definitely a possibility for the future.” This might mean seeing massive RPGs of Fallout and Elder Scrolls proportions on the dark horse console at some point in time.
“We’ll look at any platform that will support that games we’re trying to make,” said Hines, “but that’s the key thing — the console has to support the game as it is designed.”
This doesn’t mean that every single blockbuster title coming out of Bethesda will be seen on the Wii U. Hines says that creating games for multiple platforms takes a lot of time and work to make it happen properly — besides making sure it’s stable on each platform, there needs to be localization work. “Just doing 360, PS3, and PC — I don’t think people understand the amount of work that goes into that,” said Hines. “All of the localization you have to do… all of the testing you have to do… on every platform in every language… It’s a pretty huge undertaking.
“So you aren’t just supporting the Wii U; you’re supporting it in English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish.”
That doesn’t mean it’s never going to happen. Hines reassured ONM that “it’s definitely a possibility.”
