Gears of War 3 Sells 3 Million During Launch Week

30 Sep, 2011

With the launch of Gears of War 3 last week, the trilogy ender has become the biggest game of 2011. The numbers say it all — with over 22,000 midnight launch parties and events, Epic Games and Microsoft announced earlier Thursday that the game moved more than 3 million copies worldwide. That’s only the first week of sales. We also wonder how many times can we use the number 3 in this article.

The Xbox 360 exclusive title has now placed the franchise at more than one billion dollars in sales over the entire series. That’s a lot to accomplish in just a little more than seven days. Gears 3 has already made more than any 2011 game to date as well, and if things can’t look any better for Epic Games, it’s also the first Xbox 360 exclusive introduced this generation to go beyond the billion dollar milestone.

“‘Gears of War‘ was the first killer app for Xbox 360, and the series has continued to contribute directly to the overall success of the platform ever since,” said Microsoft VP Phil Spencer of Gears‘ success. “‘Gears of War 3‘ kicked off the biggest Christmas period in Xbox history, setting the standard for the kind of amazing, action-packed, experiences gamers should expect on Xbox 360 this year.”

And what a release season it will be. With Dark Souls releasing just next week, other big name franchises are also getting ready to do battle. Assassin’s Creed: Revelations and Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim are set to drop in November, so Gears 3 looks to be in some elite company already.

With more than 50 perfect review scores from around the web, Gears of War 3 has also become the highest-rated Xbox 360 exclusive this year. That’s a lot of recognition in just one week. We wonder what it will look like as Christmas approaches.
