With Batman: Arkham City getting as much attention as it has been, one wonders where Rocksteady Games will go after their latest caped-crusading title releases later this month. Well, says Rocksteady’s Marketing Manager Dax Ginn, there may be more to come.
“Man. That’s really tough,” said Ginn in an interview with CVG. “I mean, I think as long as we’re still enjoying it and as long as we feel we can contribute to the Batman universe… That’s how it feels. There’s some amazing stuff going on with Batman all around the world at the moment and we feel as though we’re making our own little contribution in the form of the Arkham-verse.”
It didn’t take much to convince the dev team at Rocksteady that Arkham City needed to happen after Asylum‘s release. In fact, Ginn said earlier this month that the conception of Arkham City began before Asylum was even completed. The attentions to detail and creating an entertaining title featuring the comic universe’s favorite gadget man has given Rocksteady great opportunities, and Ginn says they’re ready to keep on going.
“So as long as we’ve got stories to tell,” said Ginn. “So long as we feel we can do that and do that really well. There’s not other character that’s as awesome as Batman who’s got such an incredible rogues gallery, who’s got such an amazing structure for gameplay.”
We can second that, as Arkham City is stuffed full of every single Batman villain imaginable, from The Penguin to the Joker. With a quick change in the situation, the game takes on a whole new feel, and Ginn says that’s what makes Arkham City so successful. “All it takes is to give a guy an assault rifle and it changes the entire nature of combat,” he said. “So you can put Batman up against 30 thugs in the street and just cane them and feel like a total don, but as soon as one of them’s got a shotgun you have to rethink what you do.
“That’s really rare for a superhero and we really love using the facets of his personality to create gameplay out of that.”
Arkham City is already looking to challenge some of the biggest triple-A titles out there. Whether it’ll make a dent in the hubbub of the upcoming frantic release season remains to be seen, but many a gamer is excited for this pedal-to-the-metal action adventure. “I don’t know what’s going to happen in the future, but right now I feel like we’re in a real sweet spot with the games that we’re making, the opportunities that we have so I don’t really want that to change,” said Ginn.
Neither do we.
Batman: Arkham City is due for release on October 21st for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
