Gears of War 3 brings with it the conclusion of an epic story. However, Cliff Bleszinski, better known as Cliffy B and the creative mind behind the blockbuster Xbox shooter series, says that his team can do better. While it’s the end of Delta Squad’s fight against the Locust, every story has a beginning, and the beginning of this war hasn’t been told yet.
“There’s so many stories that can be told in this world,” said Bleszinski in an interview with Develop. “The brand is stronger than ever. Hopefully the game [Gears 3] sells more than Gears one or two, but we’ll see.”
Thinking back to the very first Gears of War, the story begins with Marcus Fenix in a jail cell, and his very best friend Dominic Santiago bails him out (don’t lie, a little tear came to your eye just now). How did he get there? What did he do to get there? And what are these Locust things on this planet Sera? What the hell is “imulsion,” something that Augustus Cole reveals to be a money-maker later in the game? With so many unanswered question (and answers) presented as the overall story progressed, obviously many fans want to know more of this unique setting. There’s certainly enough material to have the Gears‘ team make more great games, and Cliffy B says it’s a possibility in the future.
“…there’s the long history of this war, tons of different stories to tell and thematically if you figure what makes a Gears game in the future, there’s a lot of different directions we could go in,” said Bleszinski. “I’m not burnt out on it anywhere as some might assume or think.”
In a move that could be reminiscent of the Xbox’s other exclusive blockbuster Halo, Bleszinski says it’s definitely a possibility that Epic Games could go in the same direction as Bungie sans handing off the series to somebody else. “There’s been a couple more Halo’s and a few more Call of Duty’s so who knows, maybe we’ll be able to build upon that success,” he said. “You look at the numbers that Call of Duty and Halo pulls and we’re not at that point yet. I’m hoping Gears of War 3 brings us closer to that point. People forgot also that we’re only the third game of the series.”
Gears fans are certainly excited to hear that. While this certainly isn’t a confirmation of whether there will be a Gears of War 4 or not, it’s certainly hope for a future continuation.
Gears of War 3 is currently available worldwide for Xbox 360.
