After having released earlier last week, id Software’s latest FPS title RAGE certainly did cause some vengeful anger among the PC gaming population. Everything from terrible performance to completely unplayable game complaints were heard loud and wide. id Software responded by releasing a patch to fix all of the above issues.
Things got so bad that it even caused John Carmack, who usually keeps his cool, to drop some colorful expletives. “The driver issues at launch have been a real cluster f***,” Carmack said in an interview with Kotaku. He explained that the core problem was caused by the “wrong driver” being released, so “half of our PC customers got a product that basically didn’t work.”
Ouch.
While the complaints kept on going, many were directed at the game itself, with PC players saying that they were disappointed in RAGE‘s presentation. To some, it felt as if the game wasn’t even designed with the PC in mind.
That said, Carmack responded by saying that his focus was no longer for the PC, the platform that originally carried both Doom and Quake.
“We do not see the PC as the leading platform for games,” said Carmack. “That statement will enrage some people, but it is hard to characterize it otherwise; both console versions will have larger audiences than the PC version.
“You can choose to design a game around the specs of a high-end PC and make console versions that fail to hit the design point, or design around the specs of the consoles and have a high-end PC provide incremental quality improvements. We chose the latter.”
Ouch again.
