Lineage II, The last of NCSoft’s titles to stay strictly subscription based, is finally getting the hybrid model treatment, similar to City of Heroes. Massively.com reports that exact details are lacking, but that this announcement comes hand-in-hand with the announcement of a Russian version of Lineage II.
It seems that the pure subscription model is becoming more and more a relic of the “old days” of MMORPG’s. I’m tempted to say that “going free-to-play” is a sign that an MMO needs a booster shot of subscribers, but it’s traditionally very hard to nail down subscriber numbers for MMO’s.
With something like Star Wars: The Old Republic coming out, a subscription boost is probably just what the doctor ordered for some of these older MMORPG’s.
