My Nerd Heart Rejoices: Shadowrun Online

Cliffhanger Productions, who has been working on an online Jagged Alliance remake, has apparently been developing Shadowrun Online. According to their newsletter, this will be a browser-based game, where you can team up with friends to tackle various missions.

Reading over their newsletter and the Q&A available in their forum, this looks to be a major departure from the Shadowrun game published by Microsoft as an FPS.

Just look at this prototype:

What does that remind you of?

I KNOW, RIGHT? This is probably the most excited I’ve been for a game since I first heard about Van Buren way back when. Which probably means something awful will happen, and Shadowrun Online will never see the light of day. That’s typically what happens when I want something really bad.

I really hope Cliffhanger Productions does a good job on this. A lot of long-time Shadowrun fans were let down by Microsoft’s abomination, and I was among many who thought that something more along the lines of the old SNES title would be a lot more enjoyable. That seems to be the direction Cliffhanger Productions is headed… kind of. A lot of their material refers to Jagged Alliance Online, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Shadowrun Online ends up borrowing heavily from Jagged Alliance Online. No problem! Jagged Alliance gameplay would lend itself really well to the Shadowrun setting.

Getting the setting right is one of the most important aspects of any game that tries to call itself “Shadowrun,” and Cliffhanger Productions genuinely seems to “get it.” I can’t wait, guys!
