According to Variety, Sony is close to closing a deal with Ubisoft for the movie rights to the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Ubisoft recently created Ubisoft Motion Pictures for the purpose of shopping these titles out for movie deals. They apparently want to steer clear of one-off film deals and are looking for a deal where they can maintain creative control, which was key in their negotiations with Sony.
Sony was in a bidding war with rivals such as Universal Studios. Ubisoft is attempting to establish these franchises as major brands and the marketing implications are rather obvious. Also coming up is a Nickolodeon series based on the “Raving Rabbids”. Ubisoft co-founder Yves Guillemot expressed that Ubisoft hopes to see Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell, and Ghost Recon on the big screen.
This appears to fit with Sony’s other recent video game movie productions like “Uncharted” and “inFamous”.
Would you pay premium box office prices to see an Assassin’s Creed movie? Who should be cast as Al’tair or Ezio Auditore?
