Title: Catch the Candy
Platform: iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad (reviewed on iPhone 4)
Developer: FedoIT
Publisher: BulkyPix
Tagline: Finding candy has never been more uninteresting
Family Friendly: As with most BulkyPix games, Catch the Candy is all about fuzzy and cuddly creatures, and not a drop of violence to be found. Easily safe for all ages.
After a few minutes of Catch the Candy, I started to get the idea behind the game. After an hour of Catch the Candy, I had soon had my fill of sugary confectioneries, instead wanting to find any reason to turn off my iPhone. Does that mean that Catch the Candy is bad? No, but it is not exactly going to be one of those games that you find yourself returning to time and time again.
Catch the Candy is as simple as it comes, with a piece of candy located somewhere on the screen and you having to find a way to get the candy with your little ball of fluff. I am not sure what my character was in the game, but the best I can describe it as is a blue ball of fluff. Tapping the screen will shoot out a tongue-like leash that will drag, pull and maneuver you around the screen.
The idea with Catch the Candy and most other puzzle games of its ilk are to hook you in quick and then throwing some head scratching puzzles at you after about five minutes. However, Catch the Candy decides that I should be drilled with simplicity for far too long. In fact I had played through all of the easy and almost all of the medium difficulty puzzles in under a half hour. Not exactly what you want from a game that you want to keep in your go to rotation for a few weeks. Games like this live and die by creating a false sense of ease in the beginning, and Catch the Candy flips the equation and it hurts the title.
The odd thing is that BulkyPix has made a living out of this type of gameplay with titles like Burn the Rope, but unlike the addictive qualities behind that one, Catch the Candy never hooks you at any point. Catch the Candy does fuzzy and cute well, but it does not do enough to engage the player with its lack of challenge. Catch the Candy might be fun for those that cannot finish Angry Birds, but don’t look for it to stay in your portable device for long.
The Good:
- Simple to pick up and Play
- Attractive price
The Bad:
- Very easy
- Becomes very dull, very quickly
- Better options for the price on iPhone
