The Dark Side of Playstation Plus

The Dark Side of Playstation Plus

2 Nov, 2011

When Playstation Plus first came out, I was like most that sat there and mocked the hell out of it. Sure, why don’t I pay Sony $50 a year to have a plan that offers me up free games that have sat on the marketplace collecting dust for over a year. It did not offer much in the way of incentive beyond the freebies, and I could not see the value in purchasing the service.

Of course, the service outage and information theft earlier this year allowed everyone to get a taste of the methadone that Sony was offering up to everyone. It gave people early access to the Resistance 3 beta, cloud saving and more for those that tried it out. Slowly, I noticed myself starting to get addicted to the free content, grabbing anything and everything that was free. Sure, I would never use those stupid avatar icons from Uncharted 2, but it was free.

I ended up keeping the service, buoyed by the fact that some of the free games were actually top notch titles. I have grabbed things like Costume Quest, Plants vs. Zombies, and yesterday, I even got Hydrophobia Dark Prophecy, a new game, for free. By now, I have become completely hooked on the free stuff drug that Sony is offering up. I am never going to play Golden Axe ever again, but I downloaded it because it was free. Or the idea that I went with the PSN version of Resident Evil 4 HD because I got it for half price on PSN with my Plus membership. And having all of my saves hosted up in the cloud keeps me comforted at night, after the travesty that I went through with trying to get my last PS3 fixed.

So where is the dark side in all of this? Well, I am one of those PS3 owners that have cracked open their console and have added a new hard drive. A 500GB hard drive to be exact. I figured there would be no way to run out of space with a drive of that size. But with all of this free stuff every month, I am slowly bleeding through GB’s of drive space on a regular basis. Before having Plus, I had over 350GB free on my hard drive. Since June, I have lost over a 100GB of hard drive space, grabbing Borderlands for $10 with all of its DLC, or Burnout Paradise and all of its DLC for $8. And all the PSN games I have grabbed are eating drive space like it is going out of style.

Sure I can get rid of stuff, but my evil side constantly whispers in my ear, not to get rid of Altered Beast, because you know you want those trophies. Or soemthing like Bomberman Ultra which is completely stupid, but who can argue with easy trophies that I am sure I will get around to at some point. Looking at all the stuff I have downloaded, I realize that I could be featured in an episode of Horders if they covered digital hording. All I am missing at this point is 100 digital cats to make the stereotype complete as a complete, drug addled horder.

How bad has it got? I am already contemplating a 750GB or 1TB drive for my PS3 so I can have more room for all my crazy Plus freebies that are coming down the pipeline. Besides, I need to make sure that I have room for all those Uncharted 2 icon packs that are coming down the pipeline.
