Remember when there was that announcement a while back about DC Universe Online going free to play. Yeah, there was much made of the announcement, and many hoped that it would boost the player base which has been dwindling for some time. Well, November 1st, came along and DC Universe was released free for all to play, but you would have a hard time noticing with the complete lack of PR announcements from Sony Online Entertainement.
Yes, you can download the full client, either on PC or on your PS3 and it is free. Don’t be mislead by the initial download size, with its 121MB size. That is just the front end installer for the main game, which weighs in at a hefty 14.1GB and upon installation, it comes out to around 25GB of hard drive space. Yeah, those with original hard drives in their PS3 might want to wait until they get a new drive installed.
That said, you will get the full game and all content that was available up to this point will be completely free to all those that jump in. Free players will experience a slightly smaller inventory space unless they pony up some cash, and new content in the pipe will be available as purchased mission content. But with a level cap at 30, you will reach that before you hit the end of the game, so no loss there.
I would say if you have a high bandwidth cap or just want something new to play, DC Universe Online is worth taking for a test drive. It won’t cost you much more than the time of downloading and installing the full game. And PS3 users get the added bonus of Trophies, and who doesn’t like Trophy-whoring for a living?
Did the full download overnight, no problems there. Will have to take it for a spin soon.
But this is the THIRD free to play super hero game I have access to, granted the first on the PS3, but I don’t play the other two. I’m sure this will fall to the wayside as well.
I did the download overnight thing as well. Worked well enough. It is a good game, but the extremely low level cap means that you will level out before you ever finish the game, leaving you not wanting to push forward, as there is no reward in regards to XP.
Can you get past level 7 on DC universe free online? I can’t seem to get past it..
