The Freemium model seems to be all the rage these days. Piranha Games announced a few days ago that Mechwarrior Online would be one of the latest titles to be free-to-play.
For fans of Battletech, there are going to be a few unique features that will set this title apart. In an interview with PC Gamer, Creative Director Bryan Ekman explains, “So the minute this game goes live, every day that passes in our world, it passes live in the Inner Sphere world. So August 1st 2012 is August 1st, 3049. And so we had a live content stream with a live, evolving universe going on as time progresses. We wanted to set it during that period of time because there’s a lot of change. The Clans come down, they invade, there’s the introduction of new technology. There’s lots of story pieces that are happening, and lots of territory change.”
It’s hard to say how non-fans of Battletech will react to something like this, but it is physically impossible for me not to be excited about this announcement. Much like Shadowrun Online, I think there is a lot of good that can come out of this.
Also interesting is that this continues the trend of indie titles that are coming out exclusive for PC. The take-away could be that the supposed “indie-friendliness” of platforms like XBLA and PSN aren’t all that indie-friendly after all. One of the main reasons they are rebooting this latest Mechwarrior title is because no major publisher would pick it up. Guess it’s not Battlefield-y enough.
