Konami knows that the times are changing, and they’re ready to go with the flow. Capcom’s Resident Evil is showing that they can shake things up with Operation Raccoon City, and Downpour‘s Senior Associate Producer Tom Hulett said that the Silent Hill series could do with exploring new concepts as well.
In an interview with Beef Jack, Hulett pointed out that upcoming Silent Hill: Book of Memories for the PS Vita is already exploring different genres. There’s a little RPG mixed in, and a little switch in the point of view. “I definitely think Silent Hill has room to expand into different spinoff genres — as Resident Evil has as well — as long as they keep the fundamental themes of the series intact,” said Hulett.
Well, if you didn’t keep the “fundamental themes” of these popular franchises, it wouldn’t be called Resident Evil or Silent Hill anymore now, would it? With initial rumors that Downpour was going to be an FPS title, there has also been a persistent idea that there were last-minute design changes at Vatra Games. However, Hulett said that this was never the case.
“Downpour was never going to be an FPS,” said Hulett. “That was just the result of some overzealous fans reading too much into a posting on Vatra’s website.”
Silent Hill: Downpour releases in March 2012 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
