FPS on the Go: Unit 13 Announced for PS Vita
SOCOM developer Zipper Interactive is getting ready to step into the world of the PS Vita. Today, the studio revealed its new shooter, Unit 13, which will be exclusively on the PlayStation Vita.
According to the newest PlayStation Blog entry by Brian Soderberg, President of Zipper Interactive, this game was “designed from the ground up” for the new handheld system.
With the Vita’s dual analog sticks, we were wondering if FPS games would start to appear for the handheld. Zipper Interactive hopes to deliver in grand style (and maybe even start a trend) with Unit 13. Soderberg wrote that the Vita was “the perfect platform for a fast action, hard-hitting, third-person shooter” such as Unit 13, and the game will make use of not only the dual analog sticks, but also the WiFi and 3G capabilities to do battle with other players around the world.
“The Zipper team put considerable effort into leveraging Vita’s WiFi and 3G functionality to provide exceptional social gaming and competition with friends and opponents from around the world,” said Soderberg.
There will be leaderboard positions, “Daily Challenges,” unlockables, and even friendly challenges as your buddies overtake you in the boards.
As for gameplay, the key for the Unit 13 dev team was getting players to quickly get into the action and quickly get out, said Soderberg. “The game is designed for players to move quickly into the action, choosing from one of six Operatives with unique abilities to tackle 36 action-packed missions across nine unique locales,” he wrote. “Missions come in a variety of sizes and difficulty. Some are smaller bite-sized battles; others are longer, more challenging, multi-objective missions that are a good test for any skilled shooter fan.” As you blast your way through these missions, you can unlock the ability to take on what’s called “High Value Target” battles. In other words, a giant Boss Battle. Beating them allows you to boast about it to nearby players and friends.
Unit 13 will also feature co-op play, and use of the voice chat feature. Teams can compete for positions on global, regional, or local leaderboards.
With this FPS game in the works, Zipper Interactive is definitely looking to extoll the great features of the Vita. Everything from its wireless capabilities down to the voice chat will be put to the test with this game.
Unit 13 will be available “right around Vita launch.”
