Final Fantasy faithful and retro gamers, drop everything you’re doing. Well, maybe not, but that one infamous (and very cruel) rumor has started yet again: what would truly happen if a Final Fantasy VII remake were to happen?
Lauded as one of the most pivotal Final Fantasy titles, the 1997 classic has yet to see a rebirth onto the current-gen consoles, despite preceding titles like Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy VI seeing re-releases. However, if the adventures of AVALANCHE, our most lovable (and maybe even hated) spiked-blonde protagonist were to be brought into glorious HD, Final Fantasy XIII-2 producer Yoshinori Kitase has said that he’d be making some changes.
In an interview with Official Xbox Magazine, Kitase said that an HD-remake without any tweaking simply won’t be as fun to do. “If I may speak as a game creator, if we were to produce a remake of VII for example, I would be really tempted to delete things and add new elements, new systems, or whatever because if we were to make exactly the same thing now, it’d be like a repeat,” he said.
“It’d be an issue of repetition and not as much fun to make such a game. So I’d be really interested in rearranging games or reshaping games into something slightly different even though it’s supposed to be the same game. But if we did that, the fans might be disappointed, or, ‘this is not what I was expecting’ so in that sense maybe some might say that it’s better to let memory be memory.”
Well, we all really want that remake of VII to happen. If Kitase were to make a rearrangement, perhaps it could be called something fancy like Final Fantasy VII Remix. Does that catch your eye?
“When we play the games we made years ago, sometimes we think, ‘oh, that is not really cool’ or ‘that probably should have been a bit better than that’ and that sort of thing,” said Kitase. Perhaps he’s speaking from experience with all of the current HD-remakes hitting the market now and in the near future.
“But on the other hand, those slightly negative features and bits, for some of the really enthusiastic fans of these titles, that gives the game extra flavor or personality or whatever,” Kitase continued. “So maybe they would rather we didn’t do anything about it and we just leave it in as is. It’s very difficult to decide what we should we keep in and what we should take out.”
Perhaps, but fans are still eager to know if the fabled RPG will ever be remade. If it ever does come to light, what would you prefer? Would you prefer corrections to be made, or do you want it to be left in its flawed state, to remind us how far we’ve come since its first release?
