Lots of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 news today. Unfortunately, none of it is good news.
Firstly, a whole bunch of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 artwork leaked a few hours ago. Which is kind of cool… if it weren’t for the other news that’s cropped up, that GSC Gameworld (developers of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2) is shutting down, and as a result S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 will be cancelled.
DSOgaming.com has further details, such as possible issues between GSC Gameworld and their potential console publisher. They also cited the difficulty of developing a PC-only shooter for a European audience. I’m not sure what is inherently difficult about that. By all accounts PC sales are doing pretty well, and we’re in a sort of PC gaming sweet spot, where the current generation of consoles are getting a little long in the tooth.
Whatever the reasons, this is sad news, and in some ways is reminiscent of some of the difficulties that were had in the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R.’s ridiculously turbulent development cycle. Here’s to hoping history can repeat itself, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, like its predecessor, can once again rise from the radioactive ashes.
