Retro Studios Might Work on a Zelda Title

It really is no secret that Japanese developers make markedly different games than western developers. While they both cater to gamers at large, each style has their own unique flair, something that some players might like and others might not. However, when a collaboration happens between two studios with such differing strengths and tastes, you often come out with a gem.

Nintendo’s creative head Shigeru Miyamoto said that it’s because both kinds of developers excel at different fields.

“People often say that video games made by Western developers are somehow different in terms of taste for players, in comparison with Japanese games,” said Miyamoto in an interview with Wired.com. “I think that means that the Western developers and Japanese developers, they are good at different fields. And that resulted in a different taste in [their games]. Mario Kart, I believe, was good in order to express that kind of different taste because we have many kinds of different courses for the Mario karts to run and race around.”

Miyamoto added that this could mean Texas-based Retro Studios, responsible for the Metroid Prime trilogy, might be working on a Zelda title in the future.

“As you know, we have already collaborated with Retro for the Metroid Prime series in the past,” said Miyamoto. “And I think when we talk about any other franchise, Zelda might be a possible franchise for that collaboration.”

Taking a traditional 2D scroller and turning it into an FPS-style space shooter was a monumental task, one that Retro Studios gladly took on with the release of the original Metroid Prime, which graced the Nintendo Gamecube back in 2002. Die-hard fans of the original Metroid had qualms with the updated look, but anyone who picked up the game were in for a great ride. With players now assuming the role of Samus behind the helmet, we were treated to a new experience populated with references to the world of Metroid as fans grew to love.

Can Retro Studios bring that same magic to a Zelda game? It would be pretty awesome if they did.
