Nintendo 3DS Sells More Units in First 9 Months than Wii

4 Jan, 2012

Nintendo had lots of announcements to make over the holidays about game demos, the first ever paid DLC for Fire Emblem 3DS, and other great things to come in 2012. Today, they had big announcements to make about their sales, and the numbers are huge.

The gaming giant revealed that during the first 9 months of sales, the Nintendo 3DS outsold the Wii console during its first 9 months. Pushing the sales along were Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 both of which are the fastest-selling games in the franchise history. They both are also the first 3DS games to reach one million units (and counting) each in the U.S. alone.

Link wasn’t far behind, finishing the sales race at more than one million units to date in the U.S. It’s the 45th Wii title to reach this milestone.

“One of the strongest software line-ups in our history helped Nintendo have a great holiday season and to close 2011 with a full head of steam,” said Nintendo of America sales and marketing exec Scott Moffitt. “Not only have the new Mario and Zelda titles already broken records, but with strong reviews and satisfied customers sharing their positive experiences, all three are also shaping up to be the latest long-tail titles from Nintendo.”

With 2011 now behind all of us, Nintendo clocks in as a huge winner. More than 4.5 million Wii units sold during the year, and the 3DS sold more than 4 million units. Overall, Nintendo enjoyed over 12 million total hardware unit sales. That’s a lot of really big numbers, but the big news don’t end there.

Nintendo said today that Mario Party, Pokemon, Kid Icarus, Resident Evil: Revelations, and Metal Gear Solid 3D Snake Eater will continue to push the 3DS to success, well into 2012.

“…with a massive first- and third-party line-up in the first part of the year…the prospects for 2012 are extremely promising,” said Moffitt.
