[UPDATE] Diablo III to Consoles Still in Limbo

[UPDATE] Well, the excitement certainly didn’t last long. In a statement of clarification to Game Informer, Blizzard has said that Bashiok’s original tweet was not a full-fledged confirmation.

“Bashiok’s response on Twitter was intended as a confirmation that we’re actively exploring the possibility of developing a console version of Diablo III, as we’ve mentioned in the past,” said Blizzard. “This is not a confirmation that Diablo III is coming to any console platform. Our focus right now is on finishing the PC/Mac version of Diablo III and making sure it’s a worthwhile successor to the Diablo series.”

Remember that one time when the rumor mill was turning exceptionally fast? It’s still turning pretty fast on a few rumors, but it’s stopped on a big one. We’re specifically talking about the one with Diablo III coming to consoles. It’s stopped turning, because Blizzard has confirmed that a console version of Diablo III is now fact. We’re not kidding you. Seriously.

Blizzard’s Community Manager Bashiok created quite the stir with a tweet in response to a fan’s question, asking if he could confirm or deny the presence of Diablo III on consoles.

“Yup,” said Bashiok. “Josh Mosqueira is lead designer for the Diablo console project.”

Mosqueira is the lead designer on the Diablo III game itself, so we can be sure that the console version is in great hands. No further details have been forthcoming, but we know that Blizzard has previously said that they don’t want to do a direct port. Instead, they want to build it for the console. “We want to build it for console,” said Diablo III director Jay Wilson in an interview with Game Informer. “There’s a key difference.

“Our goal is to make a game that feels like it’s natively made for a console. If we make it, we want it to feel like a Blizzard game and that we built it for that platform from the ground up.”

So there you have it gamers. If you’ve ever wanted to play a Blizzard game and never had a decent computer to run them on, now’s your chance to delve into the depths of hell with Diablo III. No release date has been discussed yet.
