Bit of a surprise from Nintendo of America today: the Tecmo/Koei augmented reality 3DS game Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir will make it to North America. The horror game has a release date of Friday, April 13, 2012. Spirit Camera was released in Japan just last week.
Part of the Fatal Frame series, Spirit Camera uses the trendy, tricky AR features of the 3DS to make ghosts appear in your surroundings. Which may not be that scary if you’re, say, outside on the veranda in the middle of the day. But if you’re playing at 1:00am in your attic, it may very well be brown trousers time. Spirit Camera comes with a 16-page booklet – the “Diary of Faces” – that is used to trigger spectral events in the game’s storyline. As seen in the accompanying screenshots, the AR camera will appear to pull ghosts out of the pages.
The NA release of Spirit Camera is a welcome announcement for Fatal Frame fans as the series’ previous installment, 2008′s Wii-exclusive Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, never made it out of Japan. Our ears are to the ground for a European release for Spirit Camera.
