Vita’s Mortal Kombat Looks to be Incredibly Fatal in a Good Way

PS Vita? Mortal Kombat? Can it be? Believe it or not, fighting games on the PS Vita have become a trend, and Mortal Kombat is about to pull off the biggest fatality on the competition through some of the Vita’s unique features.

In a recent Q&A posted on the PlayStation Blog, Mortal Kombat creative director and series co-creator Ed Boon gave us a taste of what to expect on this powerful handheld punch.

For one, don’t expect a watered-down version of what happened on the PlayStation 3 version. In fact, says Ed Boon, it’s “actually everything from the PS3 game.” “The entire Story Mode and all the downloadable characters and content, plus additional modes and features that are tailored for PS Vita” will be on the PS Vita version. “We really wanted to take advantage of Vita’s hardware,” said Ed Boon in the Q&A.

The Vita version of Mortal Kombat will also feature the same 60fps framerate of the PlayStation 3 version. “We wouldn’t accept any compromises there; we needed the game to run at the same framerate as the PS3 version,” said Boon when asked about how smooth the Vita will run with Mortal Kombat.

A feature that Mortal Kombat Vita will definitely have are the Challenge Towers. Because of how players play on a handheld, it’s going to require something different than sitting down on a console. “We identified the Challenge Tower as a perfect fit for mobile sessions, so we expanded it greatly for PS Vita,” said Boon. “There are actually two Challenge Towers in the PS Vita version, and the new one has 150 challenges that are exclusive to PS Vita. A number of those challenges use PS Vita’s hardware features: the touch screen, the accelerometer…”

Sorry, no rear touchscreen was included, but Boon did say that the front touchscreen will definitely come into play. Fatalities are going to be fun this time, with players slashing away at their screens to execute the deadly finishing moves. “…you can touch your X-ray meter to execute an X-ray attack,” explained Boon when asked about the touchscreen capabilities. “For fatalities, you can ‘slash’ the screen with the appropriate inputs — say, away, away, up — to execute the fatality. It makes some of the more difficult fatalities easier and it’s fun to slash at your screen to fire off a fatality. I was surprised by how engaging it is.”

Other features, including the accelerometer, will most likely be featured in the aforementioned Challenge Towers, though Boon didn’t go into too much detail. However, Boon did hint at what some of the controls might be, such as tilting your Vita to affect gravity. While there won’t be any crazy 8-player online brawls, Boon did assure players that there would be some one-on-one old fashioned scrapping in the ring through online connections.

Hopefully gamers will be pleasantly surprised at how fun this will be to take on the go. Nightmare boss? Bad day at work? Just finish your opponent in the goriest fashion ever. It’ll probably make you feel better on your commute home. We would hope so, anyway.
