Activision held their quarterly financial conference call, and while these are normally a boring affair, with lots of numbers thrown around, there are a few nuggets of interest to gamers. This call was no different with news for Call of Duty and Blizzard fans alike.
First off, Activision did announce that they were the number one game publisher in North America in 2011, with several products propelling them to that marker. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 sold over $775 million in five days and was the fastest entertainment product to $1 billion, reaching that mark in 16 days. The previous record was the movie Avatar, which completed that feat in 17 days. Skylanders was also a big success for Activision, posting up over 20 million figures sold since its release. More surprising was the Call of Duty Elite program, which had seven million subscribers, with 1.5 million of those being premium subscribers.
One new product that was announced was a Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Content Collection for release in March of 2012. This new product would be a collection of items that have been released to Call of Duty Elite members. Currently the content package is announced for the Xbox 360, but no mention was made whether the collection would be a downloadable item from XBLA or a disc based product in stores.
Unfortunately, the company stated that there would be no releases from Blizzard in the first quarter of 2012, but that they expected to have two titles released before the end of calendar year 2012. One would assume this would be both Diablo III and the second act of Starcraft II, but the titles were not named in the report.
All in all, it was a good year for Activision Blizzard in 2011, as they topped things off with a note that they had the #1 and #5 top titles sold in North America (Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 and Call of Duty Black Ops respectively), with Skylanders being the #10 game if you include all of the figures that were sold.
