Unreal Engine 4 is Going to be Epic: Epic Games Hard at Work on new Game Engine
Epic Games isn’t wasting any time living up to their name. With Gears of War 3 tucked away and their new IP Fortnite under development, one wonders how they have had any free time to mess around with creating a powerful new engine.
Well, they have, and at the recent DICE Summit, Epic Games’ Mark Rein did a bit of a tease move, saying that the Unreal Engine 4 will be revealed sometime in 2012. Will it be at E3? Gamescom? Some other trade show? We don’t know, but the latest reports say that this engine is so powerful that it requires the processing power of hundreds of the current Xbox 360 hardware.
We’ve seen how Epic Games has pushed the Xbox to the limit. The very first Gears title released back in 2007, and it looked pretty neat already. Comparing it to Gears 3, you can see just how much they’ve been able to push the envelope.
As one of the most widely-used engines in the industry, it’s not a surprise that with rumors of next-gen consoles floating about, it’s time for a new Unreal Engine. “People are going to be shocked later this year when they see Unreal Engine 4 and how much more profound an effect it will have,” said Rein.
Epic Games knows how to deliver, and we hope that the new engine will live up to its namesake. And Epic’s too.
