Little Red Riding Hood Ain’t Little Anymore

Little Red Riding Hood Ain’t Little Anymore

American McGee knows how to make things crazy. Weird crazy, psychotic crazy, you name it — it leaves an impression. He certainly left an impression with his bloody spin on Lewis Carrol’s Alice in Wonderland. Now McGee’s studio, Spicy Horse, is set to take on Little Red Riding Hood.

Well, if we can even call it Little Red Riding Hood any more.

Now set in Japan’s Edo period, Spicy Horse is making Little Red Riding Hood more than just a girl off to see her grandmother. She’s a demon hunter, accompanied by a few friends, and that wolf is still pretty big and bad. Somehow though, we don’t think Little Red is going to be fretting over this furball.

Entitled Akaneiro: Demon Hunters, Spicy Horse has revealed a few pieces of concept art for their new title along with a couple of details.

“A unique ARPG combining Japanese art and folklore with the classic Red Riding Hood tale,” reads the game’s Facebook page. It’s starting to sound a lot like Clover Studio’s Okami, but little other details have been revealed for gameplay.

Akaneiro: Demon Hunters is a unique free to play Action-RPG adventure presented within a vivid and expressive hand-painted world,” continues the page. “Discover fantastic locales, meet bizarre characters and hunt ancient demons, all set to the backdrop of late Edo period Japan.

“In the role of a famed Red Hunter, it is your task to restore balance and quell the restless Yokai by force.”

Will Spicy Horse bring the magic? Alice: Madness Returns proved that they know their stuff, and aren’t afraid to step it up. Akaneiro: Demon Hunters is set to be released in “Late 2012,” but for what platforms, we don’t know. Yet.
