Final Fantasy Versus XIII Remains a Mystery, Won’t Appear at E3 2012
This really is not shocking news anymore. First announced back in 2006 to much pomp and circumstance, the game seems to be getting delayed more and more. Then again, Duke Nukem Forever finally released right? There might be hope for Versus XIII after all, but we don’t recommend holding your breath. You’ll probably end up at the hospital.
Since its announcement in ’06, the game has progressed very little, and has literally disappeared off the radar, only to resurface briefly late last year to the tune of, “You might know more. Maybe. Sort of. Kind of.” A few have called it the title that prevents Tetsuya Nomura from the next proper Kingdom Hearts release. Some know it as having maybe something to do with both Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2, but only maybe. Vaguely. Perhaps?
At this point, it’s a pretty trailer that might look severely outdated, given that it’s now six years old. Last week, Square Enix confirmed titles that would be displayed at E3 2012, one of the industry’s biggest tradeshows. You guessed it: Final Fantasy Versus XIII was nary to be seen on that list.
In a quick quote of this month’s Game Informer magazine, Nomura had this to say:
We would like to ask for your patience on an official announcement for this title. It always takes time when tackling the challenge of doing something completely new, but we are doing our best to bring information to the fans as quickly as we can. Your patience is greatly appreciated.
Fans have been pretty patient for six years, but some are starting to lose faith. It is a possibility that this year’s Tokyo Game Show could be the stage for a big Versus XIII announcement, but let’s not hope for too much at this point.
Square Enix did, however, provide an update late last year, stating that in November 2011 the game was in an alpha state. While that would translate into the publisher announcing the title way too early, Final Fantasy XIII did take a long time to develop and release as well. And it certainly didn’t live up to the hype, according to a fair few fans. Will Versus XIII survive the buildup, or has it already hit rock bottom on the hype-o-meter?
