Diablo III Destroys PC Sales Records with Flames
It’s a party for Blizzard Entertainment these days, and they’re tossing some confetti around. Today, the studio announced that Diablo 3 sold more than 3.5 million units just within 24 hours of its release. Yeah, 3.5 million in just a 24 hour window. That’s wild.
That doesn’t include the additional 1.2 million players who got the game for free thanks to Blizzard’s Annual Pass promo for World of Warcraft. So in total, about 4.7 million players got their hands on a copy of Diablo 3 within 24 hours.
With that many people playing a PC game on day one, this is the largest PC game launch in history.
If that isn’t staggering to you, Blizzard has said that based on “internal company records and reports from key distribution partners,” the numbers keep ballooning since its launch last Tuesday. Now there’s more than 6.3 million players.
For a platform that gamers have largely referred to as either “dead” or “dying,” those are some pretty impressive numbers.
