Assassin’s Creed: Utopia has Narrative Links to AC3, but Isn’t Essential, says Ubisoft

Assassin’s Creed: Utopia has Narrative Links to AC3, but Isn’t Essential, says Ubisoft

If you’re not into the whole “mobile phone apps and games will give you more stuff on the actual console game” idea, then rest easy. Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed: Utopia, an upcoming mobile phone game, won’t be bringing anything to Assassin’s Creed III. It’s just more of a story filler.

“There are no links between the games,” said Assassin’s Creed producer Andreane Meunier in an interview with Eurogamer. “But the narrative will lead into the AC3 narrative, since it’s kind of pre-era to the Assassin’s Creed 3 era.”

Whether this will be enough to get people to buy the GREE-exclusive tie-in remains to be seen, but apparently Ubisoft says that a lot of people out there who don’t care for the HD console games like the comics, novels, and everything else that has to do with Assassin’s Creed.

“One of the things we do check a lot is how people consume our product,” said Meunier. “So, who is our consumer? And of course our main consumer is on the HD [console] market. But you’d be surprised to hear that some consumers of the Assassin’s Creed brand have never touched the HD game. We actually have a lot of people who are mostly into the narrative that have read the novels and things like that.

“We do feel like the product we’re offering actually answers a need that the community has expressed.”

AC: Utopia will be focused on the colonization of America, and the title itself lends to the idealism and optimism of those who left Europe for the New World.

“In our narrative, Abstergo is building a program called Utopia in order to revisit and reconstruct eras like this,” said Meunier. “The colonies were getting built while Abstergo’s revisiting the same kind of process through the simulator.”

Unfortunately, she didn’t say what kind of game content it is, but has ruled out the card game format. No release date nor pricing information has been revealed either, but with AC3 arriving on October 30th, we’re thinking that AC: Utopia won’t be too far afterwards.

  1. Well that’s sort of a crazy to admit. “Hi, we have this product that you totally don’t have to have, but if you want it it’s there, whatevs.”

Not sure if I buy the whole we-have-fans-who-just-read-novels argument.
