Death Brings New Game+, Crucible Mode

Death Brings New Game+, Crucible Mode

Death is a pretty no-nonsense kind of guy. He’s an equal opportunist too. Everyone’s gonna die eventually, right? That includes you. That’s quite all right though, because Darksiders 2 is going to make Death’s journey a lot more fun than the doom and gloom, lights at the end of the tunnel and… Okay, maybe that’s going a bit far.

Here’s one thing for sure though: THQ is pulling out all the stops for the sequel to War’s story, and today revealed that there’s two additional things to look forwards to once the game has been said and done for. There’s always going to be a New Game+ these days, and Death won’t be missing out on it. Once you complete the game, you can always start over again and get your medieval on with all of your acquired weapons and skills, according to a post on the game’s forums.

That’s only the first new little tidbit. For those of us really wanting a challenge and a bit of a gamble, there’s the Crucible, as the forums revealed shortly after. It’s exactly as it sounds: stuffy, hot, and nasty. This 100-wave arena has a bit of a twist, and it involves loot. It always involves loot, just like a chase involves errant fruit stands. Right?

In order to fully unlock The Crucible, players must first complete the initial area, The Forge Lands. Only 25 waves will be available to you then — in order to unlock the other 75, you must find three tarot cards scattered throughout the sprawling world of Darksiders 2. Each tarot card will grant you an additional 25 waves of monsters to defeat.

This is the gamble: at the end of five waves, players will be given a reward, from the very tiny to the very large. You can choose to take the gift and leave — or you can continue onwards to acquire bigger and badder loot. If you die though, you will lose all and start again from the beginning.

If you’re brave enough to go into the Crucible, the rewards won’t skimp. Items offered in it will be special items that you won’t be able to find throughout the rest of the game. Legendary items like “Death’s ultimate armor” can be found, but only inside the Crucible. There also will be specialty unlockables to help getting through certain parts of the game, completion of all 100 levels, and also for taking out all of the waves in a single sitting. We don’t really advise that, though.

With Darksiders 2 already a massive size and just about a gazillion times bigger than the last, New Game+ and The Crucible adds some more hours into it. Maybe it’s time you got away from shouting at dragons and took a ride on the deadlier side of things? Mission-based DLC has also been planned for release after the game hits retail.
