id’s Tim Willits Understands Valve’s Half-Life 3 Silence

Still waiting on Half-Life 3? You and every other gamer out there, but id Software says that they understand Valve’s “let’s not say anything” stance for the time being. In an interview with Penny Arcade, creative director Tim Willits said that announcing the likes of Rage far too early was a terrible mistake. It’s one that they’re not going to repeat again, either. In the future, they’re probably going to be pretty tight-lipped about everything.

“One thing we did learn with Rage, one of the things that changed was going from no publisher to working with EA to working with Bethesda, we learned that we showed stuff too damn early,” said Willits. “I’ve said in some talks I was so worried that people would not understand the vehicle-based combat so I talked about it first.

“You know, everyone knows that Valve is working on Half-Life 3, and I think it’s fine. It will be cool when people see it, and they’ll be excited.”

There really isn’t official word on the street yet about Half-Life 3, but if Willits says it is so, then perhaps it is so. Or maybe he just accidentally revealed something he really, really shouldn’t have?

For future releases, id hopes to emulate what Skyrim powerhouse Todd Howard did. “When we’re ready to show stuff, we’ll have a plan,” said Willits. “Everyone knew what Todd Howard was working on. …Hopefully we can do that again.”
