With the recent news that Nintendo’s Switch was one of the fastest ever selling consoles in North America, it wasn’t going to be long before we saw the published console sales from the other big names. Well, Sony has now announced its colossal sales figures of 5.9 million units for the PlayStation 4 over the recent 2017 festive holidays, along with a few other interesting figures.

The PlayStation 4 was initially released at the end of 2013, just in time for the holiday season that year. Since then, the PlayStation has racked up cumulative sales of 73.6 million units globally. The PS4 system is currently available in 127 countries worldwide.

As well as the hardware sales, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) reported 55.9 Million PS4 games sold this holiday and the growth of subscribers to its PlayStation Plus Membership rising to 31.5 million.

“Thanks to the continued support from our fans across the globe, we are honoured to announce remarkable sales during the holiday season. PlayStation Network continues to demonstrate spectacular growth, with the number of PlayStation Plus subscribers surpassing 31.5 million, and PS Store recording its largest-ever monthly content sales in December 2017. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our community and our partners for helping us achieve such phenomenal milestones. We promise our unwavering commitment to bring more amazing experiences to our fans, including exclusive games and innovative network services, as PS4 continues to flourish as the best place to play.” said John Kodera, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Sales figures like these are good news for console manufacturers and great news for gamers as well. With sales still high, the content for these consoles will still be getting churned out for us all to play.
