This past Tuesday, we finally had Microsoft join the “next generation of consoleS” discussion with the oddly-named Xbox One. I say “oddly” if only because of the confusion when discussing the OG Xbox and this new console, which have both been referenced as Xbox One. But that is neither here nor there, as the name is in place and we know more than we did up until Monday of this week.

But what about the console and the actual event, and where do gamers stand at this point in time on Xbox One? I got a lot of talk from people who thought I was a bit optimistic about the console when I was Live Blogging the event, and to be honest, I was a bit excited. But there was a seed of disappointment, in general. I liked what they showed and the potential is there, but as a gamer, I can see where the disappointment would lie. For gamers, the event was a letdown, as games were more of an afterthought.

Let’s look at the positives first.

The live TV stuff is a pretty cool thing. The living room in my house is where the major entertainment happens and having a way to navigate my cable experience in a better way is a benefit. I lived the ease of searching cable content and switching between live TV and other experiences on the Xbox One. These are neat features.

Same goes with the Snap panels, which are a feature of Windows 8 that has migrated to Xbox One. Think of having a Wiki or a guide up on the side of the screen while playing a game. That is a neat thing.

And the games they did show do look pretty good, although we are only seeing rendered sequences using the game engines. But it shows the power of the system.

And let us not forget that using an external storage device allows us to keep growing our data storage size as we need it, without any worry about unbolting the console to update it, or paying for overpriced hard drives direct from Microsoft.

We also know that our Xbox Live account is carrying over with gamerscore and achievements intact, which is a nice thing. Gold subscriptions also cover a console, rather than a user, which should reduce the cost of gold subscriptions for a one console house.

But we did find out some bad things, like…

…the idea that my Rock Band library will be cast aside with the Xbox One, as will most of my XBLA titles. Backwards compatibility is definitely not happening with the Xbox One. I really thought that the architecture would be similar enough to keep older games on the new system but that was not the case.

And while I was psyched for the NFL announcement, once you step back and look at what this NFL agreement is, it is a bit of a letdown. It is not Sunday Ticket. It is more of a general partnership between the NFL and Microsoft, meaning Surface tablets used by the teams and other advertising and opportunities.

But the elephant in the room about this presentation was the lack of games shown at the event.

You had a gaming audience tied into this event and the lack of games shown is a bad thing. Sure, they said lots of games are going to be at E3, but this was Microsoft’s day in the sun to show off what is coming and they dribbled a single through the infield instead of knocking it out of the park. Gamers wanted to see games and beyond Forza 5 and Quantum Break, we got little in the way of games.

A Halo TV show was the big Halo announcement? Why not tease Halo 5. I can totally understand why gamers would be upset with this presentation and being told to wait for E3 to see more.

It is a letdown for that core audience that wanted to see the next wave of games, especially when Sony knocked it out of the park with not just games, but actual gameplay back in February at their event.

They also did not clarify the game install issue, which could be huge for a household like mine where we own three Xbox 360 devices. What happens when my son wants to play an Xbox One game in his room when he gets one of these consoles? Does he have to buy a copy for that Xbox One or will there be a way to handle that smoothly? It is a huge problem for those households.

Sure, I am not going out to buy three of these things on day one, but they will be purchased at some point, and it will be a huge sticking point.

Right now, we have lots of potential with Xbox One when it comes to entertainment, but nothing substantial for those who look to it for gaming. I am sure that this will change after E3, but in the meantime, I still see Sony holding the ball in their court and blocking Microsoft like a Dikembe Mutumbo commercial when it comes to core gamers.

Casual fans were probably served and intrigued by being able to watch Price Is Right while surfing the web, but for those that built the Xbox brand as gamers, we will still have to take a wait and see approach for this next generation from Microsoft.

The first expansion to the free-to-play MMORPG Star Trek Online, entitled Legacy of Romulus, is now live.

For the first time, fans of the game set in the same universe as the TV show will be able to play as either a Romulan or Reman and explore the diverse shared history between the two races in new story-driven content. Denise Crosby resumes her role as fan favourite Empress Sela that delves deeper into the destruction of Romulus. The Klingon faction has also been updated with full level 1-50 progression.

“Legacy of Romulus is the first Star Trek Online expansion and we are pleased to be able to offer players and fans alike a chance to play as a member of the Romulan Republic during this crucial time. It’s an exciting time in Star Trek Online and with Romulus and Remus gone, players need to rise up and revolt against the oppressive Tal Shiar regime.” Daniel Stahl, Executive Producer of Cryptic Studios

Set after Star Trek: Insurrection, the MMORPG continues the legacy of the universe that existed pre-JJ Abrams his his two new movies. Visit the official site for more information.

Fans of the vine-swinging, barrel-bashing, chest-thumping Wii favourite will be glad to hear that Donkey Kong Country Returns…returns? This time in 3D. On your 3DS, naturally.

DKCR was a blast from the past in 2010 as Nintendo revitalised the SNES classic with travel between foreground and background, rich and vibrant level graphics, and a fun, vibrant style that collided retro sensibilities with modern production values. Now the update has been updated, with 3D graphics and new content for mobile gamers on the 3DS platform.

The aptly named New Mode is…well, new, but aimed at first-time gamers to the platform genre, giving Donkey and Diddy an extra life heart each making the ease in a little better for newbies. Other helpful items include the ability to constantly switch between the two apes, Green Balloons to protect against falling off a cliff or a ledge, and Crash Guards, which render the cheeky chimps invulnerable during mine cart and rocket barrel areas. Veterans will be able to play the game as it was originally released.

DKCR:3D also includes a whole new “Cloud” world complete with eight new stages available after players complete the main game, along with the facility for two local players to team up as Donkey and Diddy over wifi.

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D is released tomorrow on May 24th for 3DS, so go bananas! Check out the official site for more information.

What do you get if you mash together The Sims, Civilization, and that creepy fortune telling arcade machine that turned Tom Hanks into a grown up in Big? That’s a question you have almost certainly never asked yourself, but the answer is a unique narrative/strategy game called 7 Grand Steps: What Ancients Begat that’s released on June 7th for PC and Mac on Steam.

The goal of the game is to guide a family dynasty from the very early Copper Age all the way forward through history. You know the story – boy meets girl on the shores of a river while they’re farming for crops, next thing you know they’re settling down to have kids. You reach the end of your current age and move on to the next, choosing one of their offspring to carry on the family legacy.

How much the wealth they begin with depends on how much you invested in their education, but be careful because sinking all your stock into one child means any siblings are going to be bitter and jealous, and make their brother or sister’s life a misery in time to come.

Playing the demo, it looks more like an interactive turn-based board game, and although the graphics are basic, there’s an interesting soundtrack and a strong enough premise to entice wary gamers into trying it out. The later stages look to be very complex, adding layers of gameplay to an already diverse setup. This could be one of those games you plan to play for five minutes, blink, and it’s four hours later.

The Independent Game Festival finalist from Mousechief will supposedly offer 15-20 hours of gameplay plus replays and retails at $15 on Steam or from the official website, which you can visit for more information about the game.

The new box art for the Commander in Chief Edition of Saints Row IV dropped today and it is one of those things that gives a little, but not all that much in the way of showing the game. We get a suit, a tie, mirror shades and a reflection of the capital in flames.

So, while it does not have much, we do have a new trailer to go with it that is the first in a series of short vignettes that will show off the powers and abilities that the new Commander in Chief will have at his/her disposal when looking to take out the alien scourge plaguing the planet. The first one is called “Airplane”, and you just have to watch the whole thing to get the full payoff.

Saints Row IV is coming on August 20th, 2013 to PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 from Deep Silver and Volition.

That wacky Wario is at it again. That moustachioed maestro of games design may have successfully guffed out into the world the amazing Warioware Inc. Twisted!, Touched!, Smooth Moves, Snapped! And D.I.Y but now he’s attempting something new for Game and Wario – and it sounds like a load of hot air.

Shoulder barging onto the popular band wagon of kickstarter campaigns, Wario’s decided he wants YOU to fund his latest game. Liking and tweeting about his Crowdfarter campaign would really make him rich.. and er, make his dream game come true. The man knows his priorities!

Anyway, here’s a letter we at GGS got from the offices of the master farter of disaster himself. It is simply too amazing not to share:

DIAMOND CITY– We here at WarioWare, Inc., are working with our fearless leader, Wario, to create his new Wii U game, Game & Wario – a game that can only be described as incredible, amazing, stupendous… and a bunch of other adjectives!

To help Wario achieve his dream of funding this awesome game by his target launch date of June 23, he has created his own special crowdsourcing site called Crowdfarter.com.

Here, visitors “donate coins” to the game by “liking” the site and daily updates from Wario via Facebook or by tweeting them to the masses on Twitter. Wario is so excited about bringing his genius vision to reality that he can hardly contain himself.

“Game & Wario is an entertaining collection of uproarious games that uses the Wii U GamePad controller in unique and hilarious ways,” said Wario, CEO of WarioWare, Inc., and all-around amazing guy.

“WAHAHAHAHA! THAT WAS MY IMPRESSION OF A SUPER-SERIOUS GUY IN A SUIT!GAME & WARIO IS THE BEST GAME IN THE HISTORY OF TIME! IT’S THE YEAR OF WARIO! WAHAHAHAHA!”

Well, you heard the man. BEST GAME IN THE HISTORY OF TIME! He should know, he made the game! It’s not like he’s biased or anything.

If you ask me you better get on over to Crowdfarter.com and show some support. Once enough social media ‘Donations’ are made, the site then unlocks exclusive content as a reward. Everything from updates (from the main man himself no less), videos, wallpapers and even a ringtone with Wario’s beautiful and haunting voice is on offer.

Fans can visit Crowdfarter.com
Game and Wario is out on Wii U on June 23 for North America and June 28 for EU
