You wouldn’t want to get close to Godzilla’s hands after all. One of us could probably get squished in an instant!

One of the more interesting announcements to me of late by the now Bandai Namco Entertainment was the announcement of Godzilla. Set for release on July 17 for PS4 and PS3, this game allows you to assume the role of Godzilla whilst you, ahem, tear shit up and bash your enemies to bits.

At a press event that Bandai Namco organised earlier, I was able to spend a bit of time with the game. How did I do? Surprisingly well.

In the demo I played, you assume the role of the gigantic dino tasked with the destruction of key power points whilst dispatching of human and monstrous enemies. Helicopters and tanks make up the human force against Godzilla, whilst random spawns of monsters matching the size of Godzilla make up, well, the monsters.

Of those monsters, you have the likes of King Ghidoriah, Destroyah, MechaGodzilla (yep) and SpaceGodzilla(yep yep).

As you’ll have probably worked out, this game is very much based on the Japanese lore of Godzilla.

As Godzilla, you can swing your arms, fire laser beams, charge and more. All of these are deliberately as slow to execute as Godzilla’s own moment. As such, it takes a moment to execute that moves. Turning on the spot is even a bit of a job, with a pivot system mapped to the L1 and R1 buttons deployed.

This makes sense of course, as Godzilla was never known for its mobility. Imagine if you were controlling one of the Colossi in Shadows of the Colossus. Their movements are slow as hell. Whilst not as slow as one of the Colossi, it’s on a similar track.

Story and plot were both relatively light in the short demo, leaving me free to jump right in and tear everything to pieces. On that simple premise, the game is pretty darn fun.

My personal favourite was ‘firing a frickin’ laser from frickin’ Godzilla’s mount’. As Godzilla, a blue wave of destruction travelled far and destryoed many buildings…and it was good. Oh yes, it was good.

I’ll be intrigued to see more of this game as its tale unfolds. As a fan of adventures and story-based games myself, I always like to pay close attention to the story that a game has to tell. Godzilla‘s story wasn’t immediately clear to me yet, however it’s something I hope we’ll learn about soon. Until that becomes clear though, we have quite a fun game of wanton destruction, and that’s what makes this game rather promising.
