With Nintendo’s E3 Treehouse livestream just around the corner, I thought I might share my hopes and desires for the upcoming Legend of Zelda coming to Wii U and Nintendo’s upcoming console the NX in 2017.
1. Voice acting.
Now, I know a lot of people are strongly against voice acting in a Legend of Zelda game mostly because the protagonist, Link is a mute but Link doesn’t have to talk just the people around him. Many games have voice acting and the main protagonist is a mute, for example, Half Life. Nintendo put so much effort into giving characters realistic lip flaps but no dialogue can be heard, I know you could argue that your imagination fills in the voices but I feel the Nintedo needs to take this step.
2. A sense of mystery.
Ever since The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the franchise has lost it’s certain aura of mystery and intrigue when it comes to the world of Hyrule or the locale of the game because you’re being told where to go all the time. Since Eiji Aonuma has stated this game is a massive open world and we’ve seen this thanks to footage from the Game Awards 2014, I feel like I don’t want this open world being ruined by a companion character like Navi. I want to be lost in the vastness of the world and my journey to be halted by finding a random cave that I stumbled into whilst searching for the next plot point.
3. Boss-like enemies on the World Map.
Since this Legend of Zelda world map has a massive open world, I want them to fill it with all kinds of powerful foes that actually make me think about how to defeat them, other than either running them over with Epona or shooting a couple of arrows. If the reveal trailer is anything to go by, when Link was chased by the spider like Beamos enemy then I have high hopes that this will be a reality.
4. Living and breathing world.
The Legend of Zelda since Ocarina of Time has always had a day and night cycle but that only extended to shops, towns and such opening and closing except in Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, where characters went about their daily lives, yes I know it was a set three day cycle but that was on old hardware and it gave the Zelda franchise a whole new perspective and it’s something I want them to bring back especially seeming you’d expect a massive flourish of side quests in an open world, maybe not side quests as long as The Witcher 3 because I want to finish this game but lengthy enough to enjoy. Maybe also at certain times during the day you will see random merchants who sell exclusive gear across the world map or in a town.
5. Difficulty Settings.
Finally, The Legend of Zelda needs difficulty settings and Nintendo are noticing they need to include them as seen in the recently HD Remasters but it is something they need to do for new games. The Legend of Zelda has gotten easier and easier over the generations and it makes the games too quick, now I know some people enjoy an easy ride just so they can experience the games world and story plus they may not have a lot of time due to other commitments. Whilst others such as myself enjoy the challenge and want to feel like we achieved our goal, so the perfect answer is difficulties to satisfy the demographic as a whole.
Plus, the Ganondorf amiibo support included in Twilight Princess would be welcomed.
Well, that’s just a few of my desires for the upcoming Legend of Zelda title for Wii U and NX. If you have anything you want to add please leave your thoughts and ideas in the comment section below.
