Since his departure from Konami, Hideo Kojima has been open yet characteristically cryptic at the same time about his upcoming new game. During Sony’s media briefing at Tokyo Game Show this morning, he talked about it further, revealing that Death Stranding will fall within the action genre and will feature an open world.

Kojima said the theme of the game is “to connect”, and keeping in line with that theme, Death Stranding will be “an action game where people get connected with different elements”. The game’s open world will allow “a degree of freedom” with “online elements”.

“As for Kojima Productions, the office is now chosen and [the] engine is decided, so now we can really focus on game creation,” Kojima said, adding, “We are an indie studio, and yet we want to prove that indie studios can actually create triple-A world-class masterpieces”.

He also said the game will accommodate 4K and HDR for vivid imagery.

During the briefing, Kojima showed a chibi-like sketch of four characters, seen below:

Speculation suggests that the four characters might be (from left to right) Guillermo del Toro, Norman Reedus, Hideo Kojima, and Mads Mikkelson – that last one based on rumors he’ll be co-starring in the game alongside Reedus.
