Last weekend while attending EGX, now in it’s second year at the new location of the NEC situated just outside of Birmingham; I had the chance to get hands on with some of the most anticipated releases coming to shelves within the next few months.

It was never going to be a surprise that I sat down with all the RPG’s that were on show, but I was eager to finally get time with World of Final Fantasy. This super deformed style of Final Fantasy hasn’t been done before, though it manages to pull in entry level RPG players into the series. While it also appeases the appetite of the more weathered fan of the franchise, giving nostalgic nods and filled with fan service to keep everyone interested in whats happening within the world of Grimoire.

The big mechanic that will have player hooked on the charm of the game comes in the form of the Creature Imprism ability. This allows players to capture monsters and utilise them in battle in the form of stacks. During my 15 minute demo I caught a Chocobo, a Bomb, and an Ahriman. Each of these are a staple to all Final Fantasy games, and by stacking them on top of each other I was able to create a powerful combination to take down even stronger opponents.

Each creature caught comes in a certain size, S/M/L, of course there is a limit of what can be stacked, you can have three S creatures on top of each other, a M/S also works, though you cannot stack anything on top of a L creature. Though these are powerhouses in their own right.

While everything in the menu can be tweaked, creatures can be powered up, certain elements work together to destroy others. The game is actually incredibly simple to pick up, this will speak to the more casual player who will want to take in the charm of the game and enjoy it’s story. Those who are apt with Role Playing Games will feel right at home though, there is so much that can be customised to create the perfect combination.

World of Final Fantasy launches exclusively on PlayStation 4 and PS Vita on October 28, and is shaping up to be the comfort food of RPG’s this year, something simple that you can get your hooks into. Though delving deeper into it’s systems will really bring out it’s charm.
