City based teams herald a new age for the Overwatch phenomenon.
Blizzard have done it again, riding the Overwatch train into brand new territory as the Overwatch League now several teams owned by prominent leaders in gaming and eSports across seven different cities.
That’s right, move aside Arsenal, goodbye Barcelona, and Vienna Rapids – whatever that is, I’m sure it had a good run. Now the likes of Seoul, Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Shanghai, Boston, and San Francisco boast their own Overwatch teams.
Speaking at the announcement, CEO and co-founder of Misfit Gaming – and now the owner of the Miami Overwatch team – Ben Spoont said; ‘we’re very excited by the potential to build something amazing for our fans in the months and years ahead.’
I’ll avoid being cynical about this news, as privately owned teams rarely benefit fans in the long-run, so for the moment, let’s just accept that – even a year after its release, Overwatch is far from done with its impact on the gaming community.
