Ys Net has signed a deal with Deep Silver that will cover both the physical and digital versions for the PlayStation 4 and PC releases of Shenmue 3!

The long-awaited sequel was originally announced at Sonys E3 press conference in 2015, where it was also launched on the crowdfunding platform, Kickstarter. Within 24 hours, the funding goal had been reached, and went on to break two Guinness World Records in the process, reaching $6 million.

You may be forgiven for not having heard of Shenmue as it was originally released on the Dreamcast, back in 1999. A highly ambitious game, in terms of style and gameplay, Shenmue was well received and soon gained a cult following.

Shenmue is also responsible for pioneering many of the features that we’ve become used to in many games today, including open world and Quick Time Event gameplay.

The game is currently in development at Yu Suzuki’s independent company, Ys Net, with many of the original Shenmue team members.

“We are very excited for the continuation of Ryo Hazuki’s journey in Shenmue III, and are confident the game will deliver the story and gameplay PlayStation fans have been waiting for,” said Florian Hunziker, Vice President of PlayStation’s Third Party Relations & Developer Technology Group. “The global partnership between Ys Net and Deep Silver will help realize Yu Suzuki’s vision for Shenmue III—we are thrilled to see his spirit of innovation materialize on PS4.”

The current release date for Shenmue 3 is scheduled for the second half of 2018.
