Big stories with only a little reading.
Jumping in for John this week, I’ll be bringing you the latest news stories from around the globe in the Weekly News Roundup! From the mysterious hints at Life is Strange 2, Planet Alpha getting a release date, and the Overwatch League Grand Finals, there’s plenty to keep you busy, so read on…
Life just got that little bit stranger…
If you’re like me, you’re horrendously excited for the next season of Life is Strange, which is hitting our screens next month. DONTNOD are feeding into the hype and sending the train speeding down the tracks with the new teaser released yesterday, showing some shaky dashcam footage, a frustratingly offscreen police standoff, and a car being flipped on to its hood by something totally invisible:
Theories are coming in think and fast, from douchebag Dad Charles being the one with powers, to Chris being a badass, or even a return appearance from Max or Chloe. If you read my review of The Amazing Adventures of Captain Spirit, you’ll know that I’m hopeful for the next season – now, if The Walking Dead Game: The Final Season turns out to be half as good, I’ll be impressed.
Octopath Traveler has sold far better than expected
Octopath Traveler was somewhat of a surprise at E3; a classic, nostalgic JRPG sadly exclusive to the Switch, it boomed in popularity since its announcement back in June, to the point where Japanese stores ran out of physical copies, and Square Enix were apologising to fans for making a game so beloved, there’s no one complaining about it for once!
As of today, Nintendo have announced they’ve shipped one million units globally, physically and for digital downloads, which is no mean feat for a new IP. It’s been getting nothing but praise from newbies and JRPG junkies alike, so it may well mean I’ll be buying myself a Switch.
Party on down with Nintendo and Mario at Gamescom
If you’re heading over to Cologne later this month, be sure to drop in at the Nintendo booth in Hall 9; you’ll be able to play a whole host of upcoming titles, including the latest Super Mario Party and Super Smash Bros Ultimate.
You’ll be able to play five of the minigames from the upcoming title, as well as EA Sports FIFA 19, Dark Souls: Remastered, Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Starlink: Battle for Atlas, and Killer Queen Black. Can’t make it? Not to worry; Nintendo are covering it all on their Youtube channel.
Planet Alpha lands a release date
This gorgeously atmospheric sci-fi game, is releasing on September 4, 2018, and if you can’t wait that long, there’s a trailer titled “Survival,” for your viewing pleasure:
Platformers, puzzles, and things that look a little bit like dinosaurs make up Team17’s latest endeavour, with a style that looks like you put Horizon Zero Dawn and Limbo in a blender, it’s one you’ll not want to miss. It’ll be out for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
And finally, the London Spitfires win the first Overwatch League!
In some true British pride, the London Spitfires swept the board at the Overwatch League Championship Grand-Final, to a sold out live audience of over 850k. They netted a 2-0 victory the Philadelphia Fusion, and made their mark in eSports history. Well done, guys!
