In case you missed out on the Video Game Awards or been avoiding social media over the last few days, Ed Boon and Netherrealm Studios have announced Mortal Kombat 11 with a teaser trailer.

This teaser trailer doesn’t show much beside a fight between Dark Raiden against Scorpion, with his MKX attire; which seems to confirm that MK11 will be a direct sequel (story wise) to MKX. What’s a mindbender is the fact that a throwback version of Scorpion appears after MKX Scorpion has been decimated. That raises more questions than answers.

But don’t worry, we’re find out more soon as Netherrealm Studios announced an official reveal and gameplay debut during an experimental community celebration event of Mortal Kombat on January 17th 2019. The event will be livestreamed on Twitch.

What we do know, however, is that MK11 will include a deeper character customization mode called Custom Character Variation System where players will be able to tailor any character of the roster to their liking. And as with the last few Mortal Kombat, the game will include a cinematic story mode.

Here’s what David Haddad, President, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, had to say about this game announcement:

“By giving players more creative control, Mortal Kombat 11 is a testament to why this iconic franchise is so strong and increasingly relevant after more than 25 years. This game showcases NetherRealm Studios’ extensive talent to innovate and create epic experiences for the Mortal Kombat fans and new players alike.”

NetherRealm Studios Creative Director, Ed Boon, adds:

“It’s exciting to finally announce Mortal Kombat 11 and showcase what the team has been working on. Our Custom Character Variation System opens up an infinite amount of options for players to personalize their favorite fighters. We can’t wait until January when we’ll be showing more of the game.”

Mortal Kombat 11 is currently set for an April 23rd 2019 release for Nintendo Switch (yes!), PC, PS4 and Xbox One. They’ve also already announced a Premium edition which will include the Kombat Pack. Those who pre-order the game will receive Shao Kahn as a playable character. PS4 and Xbox One players who pre-order the game will also receive an access to the beta planned for March.
