Many video games are entirely original stories. Some are based on myths and legends, while some end up getting a movie or TV show based on them.
However, most of the video games are unique pieces of work put together by the development team. Below, we look at five of the strangest video games based on movies.
1. Saw (PC, PS3, Xbox 360)
Saw is a string of horror movies in which people are put into life and death situations. To get out alive, the people are forced to play a game to demonstrate that they value their lives.
In 2004, the first film was released; then, in 2006, a video game was released based on the first film and the continuation. The video game was released on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.
The game uses the same underlying theme of the movies. It is a third-person endurance horror game that follows detective David Tapp, who is trapped in Jigsaw’s asylum.
As a player, you will control Tapp as you try to find your way out of the asylum without falling victim to one of the traps. In 2010, a continuation, Saw II: Flesh & Blood was released.
2. White Man Can’t Jump (Atari Jaguar)
The film, White Man Can’t Jump, was released in 1992. In the movie, Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson starred as a pair of street basketball players.
Harrelson plays Billy in the film. Billy is a streetball fanatic that tricks people into playing him on the assumption that he can’t play well since he is white. He then beats them and hassles them out of cash.
A game based on the film was released in 1995 on the Atari Jaguar. In the game, players can either play against the computer or other players. The players play streetball games that use the same basic rules as those used in the film.
3. Fight Club (PS2, Xbox)
Fight Club began as a novel written by Chuck Palahniuk in 1996. It was later adapted into a movie in 1999. In 2004 it was modified into a video game that is all but forgotten. The video game was released on Playstation 2 and Xbox.
The game features characters from the movie and uses the standard system for fighting games. It bears similarities to other video games in the genre like Street Fighter. The video game also has a story mode in which the player goes through several fights until he befriends Tyler Durden.
4. Napoleon Dynamite: The Game (PSP, Nintendo DS)
Napoleon Dynamite: The Game is a video game founded on the 2004 movie bearing the same name. The game was launched in 2007 on the PSP and Nintendo DS.
This game differs from other movie-based video games as it does not have a story that follows the proceedings of the film. Instead, the game is made up of a series on mini-games featuring characters and locations from the film.
As you play the game, you will control Napoleon as he wanders around his hometown. It might feel like a slight story, but it is a way of unlocking the mini-games. The game also uses a unique sketchbook-inspired style like that from the film’s poster.
5. Sharknado: The Video Game (Mobile)
Sharknado is a series of science fiction disaster films that started showing on the Syfy channel in 2013. A video game was also released alongside the many movies released in the series. The game was released on iOS based on the second movie in the series.
This running-style game follows the main character of the film; Fin. Fin weaves back and forth through the streets of New York City, evading roadblocks like sharks and cars.
